The Russian Sauna Courtyard

What makes the bathing gardens so special are the rustic sauna houses. These were handcrafted in Russia from thick logs and some are equipped with old wood-fired stone stoves. Along with structures faithful to the originals, such as an old city wall (Banya Kremlin) and a “church”

(Boyar Sauna), various wooden gates,

an oven and other details make up

the authentic Russian-Karelian sauna village, just as it can still be found today in Finland or Russia.

The Boyar House

One of the highlights of the sauna village is the imposing Boyar House, over 20 meters tall, situated on the shores of an idyllic natural swimming lake. The sight of its onion domes and ornate decorations makes visitors feel as if they’ve been transported into a Russian fairy tale. Inside the building, in addition to the Boyar Sauna—which can accommodate about 130 people—there is a relaxation room that spans two floors. During the summer months, visitors can relax on the lounge chairs right by the water and enjoy the sun.

Russian Sauna Ritual

By waving the weniks (birch twigs)

During an infusion, the hot air—with its pleasant birch scent—is circulated throughout the room. Afterward, each guest receives a cleansing treatment with birch branches, during which the skin is first fanned with the weniks and then tapped from the shoulders down to the feet. This opens the pores and improves blood circulation in the skin. The ritual concludes with a scrub using a honey-salt mixture during a second infusion.

Karelian Smoke Sauna

The smoke sauna is also one of the oldest types of sauna in existence. Its significance is ultimately reflected in the fact that it is even described in great detail in the Finnish national epic

as described in the Kalevala. To heat them up, wood is burned in a

a special open stone stove, which, however, has no chimney or flue. Instead, there are slits in the ceiling and walls through which the smoke can escape. Thick smoke wafts through the log cabin while it is being heated. You are not allowed to enter the sauna until the fire in the stove has gone out and the room has been thoroughly ventilated.
